'From one bad dream to another, it is men who pass away, and the humanists first of all, because they have taken no precautions.'

The year is 1854. London is swimming in sewage. The sewer system has not yet reached huge parts of the city, leading to the pollution of the Thames and the subsequent contamination of the water supply. The city is under siege, now, by a horrifying outbreak of cholera.

Amid this, Lauren’s surgeon father finds more and more people knocking at his door, hoping for a solution to their sickness. The cause is yet unknown; those few who manage to survive seem otherwise unremarkable. Mysterious and yet unsuccessful surgery seems preferable to the long deaths that lay before them. Over the course of months, Lauren’s father does hundreds of waking surgeries, while Lauren calms the patient until they fall unconscious from the pain.

Lauren is the youngest of four sisters, all of whom hold better prospects than she. One has already moved out of London, married, and the other two are well on their way. Lauren, suffering from undiagnosed arrhythmia and depression, is perceived as erratic and unladylike, and it seems is bound to remain and help her surgeon father forever.

That is, until she joins the ranks of the night soil men— who cart shit through the streets in the dark in a misguided attempt to keep London clean —and meets an extraordinary woman, one who Lauren sees slip into the murky depths of the Thames, only to resurface hours later.

A siren; a mermaid. Lauren is drawn down into a world that is far from magical— that is, in fact, as dark, disgusting and decaying as her own London —and there she finds herself turned into a tool, luring men into the depths for a community of women with scaly tales and beautiful faces who can no longer do it for themselves. And she doesn’t feel bad about— no, not one bit —until she realizes that what she is doing is about to tear her own life apart.

bait. (or mermaids in the time of cholera; a working title)
